To be an employee or not to be an employee – that is one of the most basic and challenging questions facing payroll professionals. In this webinar, you will learn about the federal and state laws and the regulations and guidance surrounding worker classification. We will discuss what happens when a worker is misclassified and what relief might be available to an employer. Also, we will talk about the U.S. Department of Labor’s new proposed rule on worker classification and the mid-December 2022 memorandum of understanding between the IRS and DOL regarding employment tax investigations for worker classification purposes.

Speaker:  Christopher Wood, CPP, Senior Editor @ Thomson Reuters Checkpoint
Chris has been working as an editor for more than 16 years, writing and researching on payroll topics related to employment and labor, tax and law at the federal, state and local levels.  He obtained his CPP in October 2016 and was re-certified at the end of 2022.  Currently, Chris has two articles to be published in the March 2023 and April 2023 editions of the American Payroll Association’s PayTech magazine. One is on trends in human resources this year.  The other relates to earned wage access. In addition, Chris is the facilitator for the Winter 2023 CPP study group for the New York Metro Chapter of the APA.
